The Montevideo City Council met in a closed session last night at 7pm to discuss city manager employment. Over 20 municipal employees waited outside the council chambers for the duration of the session. They expressed concerns that the council planned to terminate current City Manager Steve Jones.
After the conclusion of the session, council member Todd Hay made a brief statement assuring those gathered that “no termination was planned by the city council.”
While Jones has no immediate plans for retirement, the council made a motion for Jones and Assistant City Manager Angie Steinbach to meet over the next week to create a long term succession plan. They will report on the results of that meeting at next week’s council meeting.
Steinbach is currently a finalist in the search for a new Yellow Medicine County Administrator.
