The Montevideo City Council on Monday, December 3, unanimously approved a retirement agreement with City Manager Steve Jones, effective December 7. They also approved an independent contractor agreement with Jones by a vote of 4 to 1, with Council President Marv Garbe opposing. Assistant City Manager Angie Steinbach will serve as the interim City Manager for the next month, until she begins her new position as Yellow Medicine County administrator. Jones had discussed his retirement plans at length in a closed session of the council last month. On the Tuesday following that meeting, he told the West Central Tribune that he intended to work for three more years. Jones was not present at the meeting on Monday, and no reason for his sudden resignation was provided.
