Section 3A

3A North

#5 Dawson-Boyd def. #2 LQPV: 68-59 (OT)

  • The Blackjacks consolidate their subsection semifinal upset of state #1 Minneota with a second upset in a row over the 3A North #2 seed LQPV. After trading leads an inordinate amount of times, the Eagles pulled ahead to establish a 6-point lead (the largest up to this point) entering the latter minutes of the second half. Dawson-Boyd responded by digging in on defense and not letting LQPV score for the remainder of regulation. Bolstered by a clutch 3-pointer from junior guard, Zach Durfee to pull even, the Blackjacks would pull away in overtime to book a spot in the Section 3A Championship against Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

3A South

#3 Westbrook-Walnut Grove def. #1 Southwest MN Christian: 74-73

  • Area subsection competition has been particularly hostile to #1 seeds this year and last night saw 2 more removed in sections 3A and 2A. As 2A South #1 Waterville-Elysian-Morristown was receiving a 93-64 thrashing at the hands of #2 Springfield, 3A South #1 Southwest MN Christian lost an absolute heart-breaker to Westbrook-Walnut Grove in the final seconds of regulation. The Eagles trailed the Chargers 72-74 as junior, Jacob Van Dam was fouled from 3-point range with less than a second remaining. Van Dam cashed his first attempt, but saw the next two bounce off the rim and out leaving WWG with a razor thin 1-point advantage to secure a berth in the 3A Championship game.

*The 3A Championship Game is currently scheduled for 8:00 PM on Thursday, March 14th at SMSU Marshall*

Section 3AA

3AA North

#4 Redwood Valley def. #3 Morris Area: 86-74

  • The Cardinals, very much like Dawson-Boyd, backed up their upset of #1 seed New London-Spicer with a comfortable 12-point victory over #3 Morris Area. The Cardinals advance to the 3AA Championship against 3AA South #1 St. James Area.

3AA South

#1 St. James Area def. #2 Jackson County Central: 76-72

  • Area subsection finals tried to claim a third #1 seed victim in St. James Area last night as the Saints had to fight their way out of a 3-point deficit to the #2 seeded Huskies with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. With time running out, St. James guard, Kobe Mohwinkel would get two incredibly clutch 3-pointers to fall grabbing the Saints a shot at the 3AA title and a class AA state berth.

*The 3AA Championship Game is currently scheduled for 5:00 PM on Thursday, March 14th at SMSU Marshall*
