At 9am Wednesday, the Minnesota River at Montevideo was 17.31 feet. The river is expected to crest at 21.5 feet on Saturday evening.
Historic crests for the river include 23.90 ft on 04/06/1997 and 22.15 ft on 04/14/2001.
County Road 14 to Madison and County Road 15 to LQP are both closed. Churchill Dam is closed.
High school students have been helping out with sandbags over the past couple of days. There will be an estimated 20,000 sandbags available in Montevideo by Wednesday morning. Some of those will be set up by Monte Tire in Smith Addition for residents who are planning to stay.
The City of Montevideo today will be working to close off the TC&W rail line. Additionally, the ’69 levy will be built up two feet on Wednesday.
Road closures are constantly changing – especially township roads out in the country. Lots of road segments are now underwater.
Sheriff Olson is asking for help from residents in keeping the department updated on which road segments are underwater. It is important for emergency services to keep maps updated.
Residents are reminded to avoid flood waters at all times. According to the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department, it is never safe to drive or walk through flood waters. Six inches of water can knock you off your feet. Twelve inches of water can carry away a small car.
