Montevideo Middle School has been recognized has a 2019 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The National Blue Ribbon Program recognizes schools based on their overall academic excellence and progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. MMS is one of 10 Minnesota schools recognized in 2019. 

Over the past two years at MMS, the achievement gap for English Language Learners has decreased by 25% in math, and 13% in reading. Over the same time period, the achievement gap for Hispanic students has decreased by 19% in math and 15% in reading. 

In this interview, MMS Principal Shawn Huntley discusses what strategies the district has used to close the achievement gap and what impact the Blue Ribbon Award will have on students and staff.
