(Willmar MN-) According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, a Willmar man who died after a deadly confrontation with police last Friday morning died of suicide after cutting his own throat.

In a news release on Tuesday, Willmar Police Officer Nicole Wortham was called to a home on the 800 block of Mary Avenue Southeast in Willmar at 5:40 a.m. Friday. Upon arrival, the officer located 38-year-old Jose Reyna Lozano in an upstairs bedroom. He had a knife in his hand and also a box cutter to his own throat. He was tased after ignoring commands to drop his weapons. At one point Lozano cut his own throat. In the ensuing struggle Lozano stabbed Wortham several times resulting in injuries to her neck and shoulder. Wortham fired a round into Lozano’s leg.

Another officer, Noah Maschino, arrived and also deployed his taser on Lozano because he continued to threaten himself and Wortham. Lozano lost consciousness at one point and later died at the scene. Wortham was taken to Carris-Rice Hospital and later airlifted to St. Cloud for treatment. She was released on Saturday. Lozano’s mother also received a knife injury during the incident. She was treated at Carris-Rice Hospital and later released.

The BCA says portions of the incident were captured on body camera video and after completing their investigation, they will present their findings to the Kandiyohi County Attorney’s Office for review. Both officers are on standard administrative leave.
