(Montevideo, MN) — One of the most awaited events of the summer for much of Minnesota is the local county fair, but this year will mark the first year ever that the majority of the festivities across the state will be cancelled.

The Benton County Agricultural Society announced Wednesday that the fair scheduled for August 4th through 9th is canceled. Officials said due to the restrictions on large group gatherings it became apparent that they would not be able to have a normal fair. They say the health and safety of our community, fair guests, volunteers, exhibitors and vendors is our top priority. The 2021 Benton County Fair is set for next August.

On Thursday, the Kandiyohi County Fair Board also announced its decision to cancel this year’s fair. 2020 would have been the 120th Kandiyohi County Fair. Fair organizers say they will also plan to celebrate in August of 2021.

In an announcement posted last night on Facebook, Yellow Medicine County Fair Board President Brandon Carlson said, “We were hoping not to have to make this kind of an announcement, however, it is with great disappointment and sadness that the Yellow Medicine County Fair Board is announcing that the 2020 YMC fair will not be held this year.”

At the time of this report there are rumors that we could soon hear a decision regarding the 2020 Minnesota State Fair.
