(Minneapolis, MN) — The attorneys for the family of George Floyd plan to announce the findings of an independent autopsy this afternoon (Monday). Ben Crump and co-counsel Antonio Romanucci previously said the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office didn’t address the effect of the purposeful use of force on Mr. Floyd’s neck.
Attorney Crump said he was disappointed in the preliminary findings released by the medical examiner. The results revealed no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation and Floyd had underlying health conditions of coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease.
The family of George Floyd retained the services of a renowned forensic pathologist, Dr. Michael Baden, to perform the secondary autopsy. In 2014, Baden was also hired to do an independent autopsy of Eric Garner, a black man in New York City who died after he was placed in a chokehold by police and pleaded for his life, saying he could not breathe.
The independent autopsy announcement is expected at 2 p.m. this afternoon in a virtual news briefing.
