Last week saw the last day for the District Heat program of the Willmar Municipal Utility. The program had been in operation for 100 years and at its peak served 400 customers, the Kandiyohi County Courthouse and many downtown businesses who used the steam generated by the power plant at Litchfield Avenue and 7th Street. Officials said the equipment became too expensive to maintain over the years and with the price of natural gas dropping, the customer base dwindled. The future of the plant is still under discussion.
